DESCRIPTION
Details (Known As) Round House (former Murray Bridge Works Superintendent's Home)
Registered Name Dwelling - 'Round House'
Significance Historically, the Round House is important for its association with the first bridge over the River Murray in South Australia, being the residence and office of the bridge works superintendent, by, and for whom, it was originally constructed. The building has further historical significance for its subsequent connection with the early development of the township of Murray Bridge, serving as a school, post office, church and council chamber before entering its longest period of ownership and use by the South Australian Railways. Architecturally, the building is of an unusual design and very high quality in its use of materials, construction detail, and workmanship. The original part of the house is a very refined mid-Victorian structure, with an unusually shaped and roofed verandah/balcony surround, and unusual asymmetrical form. It has touches of opulence in the use of materials and decoration, rarely seen in such remote sites so far from the City of Adelaide at that time. Its later long institutional occupation and enlargement is of interest but less cultural significance, in that neither the plan, fabric nor decor of the altered residence represent, in any meaningful way, its associated railway use. Its life and role as a residence for the Railways Depot was secondary to the station buildings and railway accoutrements, and to the adjacent, purpose-built residences. The Round House has more to tell us about its beginnings as a bridge builder's residence, and the development of intrastate trade and transport, than it does about the railways. Clearly the highest cultural significance of the Round House resides in its strong architectural qualities and in its historical associations with the construction of the bridge and development of the township. These values are represented most highly in the original 1873 section of the building fabric, the original setting having been lost. In the majority of cases, the maps of State Heritage Places on this web site show the footprints of the most significant structures on a registered Place. However, sometimes they simply indicate the complete area of land comprising the Place. Work is proceeding to further refine the mapping of such places. It is also important to note that development control is not limited to the registered structures but extends to their setting and structures nearby (what is termed ‘development affecting’ a State Heritage Place). Hence it is vital that exact details of the listed place and implications for any proposed development be discussed with Heritage South Australia staff, as they cannot be deduced solely from the information on this web site. The inclusion of a place in the SA Heritage Register gives no right of public access. Permission to visit properties must be sought from the owners. The accuracy of the mapping of State Heritage Places is not guaranteed.
