DESCRIPTION
Details (Known As) Dwelling - The Government Roadman's House
Registered Name Dwelling - The Roadman's House
Significance This structure was built in 1872 by George Way, the Government Roadman. The structure contains rare surviving examples of vernacular building techniques, in particular the intact lath and daub walls. The lean-to section at the rear is built of sawn red gum slabs. Two massive stone chimneys form most of the eastern wall of the building. Original matchboard ceilings and most door and window fittings remain intact. Some matchboard linings are covered with the original newspapers from the date of construction. It is the oldest surviving building in Mt. Compass.
