DESCRIPTION |
Details (Known As) |
Harveys Return Landing Site, Flinders Chase National Park |
Registered Name |
Harvey's Return - Landing Site |
Significance |
This site is important because of its association with the early European contact and settlement on Kangaroo Island and the Cape Borda lightstation (registered place 10399) in particular. Structural remains on the site, including the horse powered capstan and rail track relics, are tangible reminders of both the isolation of the lightstation and contemporary engineering solutions to the problem of conveying supplies and materials from sea to land on a remote and rugged coast. The site also reflects the importance of sea trade and shipping as the main means of transport to the western end of Kangaroo Island before the advent of roads. (SHB) |
