DESCRIPTION

Significance This dugout is one of the earliest remaining in the Coober Pedy township and is one of only a few early fully underground dwellings remaining in the State. As a manually excavated dugout it provides an insight into the way of life associated with the early days of opal mining in South Australia and represents a construction technique that has only been applied in a few areas of the state and which is no longer practised.
