Significance The Whaler's Bay Whaling Site on Thistle Island is significant for its association with the early years of European settlement in South Australia and the activities of the South Australian Company in their search for an economic staple. The ruins represent a rare survival from the era of bay whaling and are probably older than any other structure of European occupation on mainland South Australia. (State Heritage Branch file)
