DESCRIPTION |
Details (Known As) |
Glenside Hospital - Administration Building; Glenside Hospital (former Parkside Lunatic Asylum) |
Registered Name |
Glenside Hospital - Administration Building |
Significance |
Architecturally the building is of high significance. It is an exuberant example of the Gothic revival style, and its grandeur of scale, skilful architectural composition, complexity of detail and embellishment, uncommon use of the broken pitch roof form and inlaid mastic decorations all add to its high architectural values. It is a testament to the undeniable skills of its architect, Robert G Thomas, a former Colonial Architect and a designer renowned for his application of the Gothic style and use of mastic filled incised work. Adding further significance is the fact that it is one of the better and largest surviving examples of his abilities.
It is a prime example of a building specifically designed as the custodial and institutional solution to a social problem (i.e. the care and treatment of the mentally ill), and represents the leading edge of design for the mentally ill of the mid 19th century. It probably ranks second only to Callan Park Asylum in Sydney as an example of the pavilion concept of Asylum design, in Australia.
The building also has high significance for its technological and scientific attributes. The architect employed many of the latest technologies available at the time, such as fireproof detailing, the incorporation of extensive internal ventilation flues within the structure, multi-light cast iron windows with opening casements small enough to prevent escape, plaster and lath lined trussed internal walls, composite steel and concrete floors and ceilings, and an extensively rivetted and screwed, corrugated, galvanised iron roof system. All are features which were uncommon in buildings of the time and remain rare today.
The high quality of the bluestone masonry, dressed sandstone, and the fine incised mastic work are a fine example of the very high skills of colonial builders. (Condensed from Conservation Study) |

In the majority of cases, the maps of State Heritage Places on this web site show the footprints of the most significant structures on a registered Place. However, sometimes they simply indicate the complete area of land comprising the Place. Work is proceeding to further refine the mapping of such places. It is also important to note that development control is not limited to the registered structures but extends to their setting and structures nearby (what is termed ‘development affecting’ a State Heritage Place). Hence it is vital that exact details of the listed place and implications for any proposed development be discussed with Heritage South Australia staff, as they cannot be deduced solely from the information on this web site. The inclusion of a place in the SA Heritage Register gives no right of public access. Permission to visit properties must be sought from the owners. The accuracy of the mapping of State Heritage Places is not guaranteed. Please contact Heritage SA ( https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/topics/heritage/sa-heritage-register) if you believe there is an error.
