Daisy Bates' Campsite |
Registered Name |
Daisy Bates' Campsite |
Significance |
The campsite used by Mrs Daisy M Bates CBE, at Ooldea from September 1919 until 1934 is a significant historic site of high heritage value to both South Australia and the Nation. The statement of significance recorded by the site researchers states: 'Bates' campsite is significant because of its association with an important historical figure. The remains of her camp are a stark physical reminder of the realities of her day to day life in the desert.' (Colley et al, 90)
Daisy Bates learned approximately 180 different Aboriginal dialects and recorded an enormous amount of her knowledge in books and journal articles. After the arrival of the Miss Annie Lock and the new Mission at the Ooldea Soak with its huts, church, dispensary and distribution of rations, Bates retired to Adelaide in 1934 and began the sorting of her papers and the writing of her book, 'The Passing of the Aborigines', which was published in London in 1938.
