Registered Name Former Stock Exchange of Adelaide
Significance The Former Stock Exchange of Adelaide was purpose-built in 1901 to accommodate the activities of the Stock Exchange of Adelaide. The Stock Exchange of Adelaide was established in 1887 with the purpose of being the single dominant association of brokers and exchange of shares in the colony. The bespoke building was the centre of share trading and business activity in South Australia for over 90 years, demonstrating not only the success of the Stock Exchange of Adelaide, but the evolution of share trading in South Australia throughout the twentieth century. Designed by architects Henry Fuller and Hedley Dunn, the Former Stock Exchange of Adelaide is also an outstanding example of the Federation Queen Anne architectural style in South Australia. The building demonstrates key attributes of the style, including red brick walling, an asymmetrical form with diagonally projecting corner bay, low tower with `candle snuffer' roof, and elaborate ornamentation to the interior.
