Former 'The Levels' Homestead |
Registered Name |
'The Levels' Homestead |
Significance |
Built in 1876 on land which was originally part of the early pastoral expansion immediately to the north of Adelaide in the 1840s, the Levels homestead is significant for its association with what, for a time, was one of the nation's and South Australia's premier merino sheep breeding enterprises. Sheep from the Levels were exhibited around the world and were important in establishing South Australia's position as a quality merino producer. Originally owned by Charles B Fisher, founder of one of the largest pastoral empires in Australia, and later sold to William Pitts, The Levels was also noted for horse breeding activities which were of great importance to the racing and trotting industries in South Australia. If it was assessed under the current Heritage Act (1993) it would meet criteria a & g. (HSA 01/2002). |
