Details (Known As) |
Boandik Terrace Blowhole Geological Site |
Registered Name |
Geological Monument - Boandik Terrace Blowhole |
Significance |
This blowhole is an important geological feature of the Mount Gambier volcanic complex, one of two areas in South Australia associated with volcanic activity. The Mount Gambier complex represents a rare volcanic landform, a fissure controlled Maar-complex feature which resulted from explosive volcanism some 4,000 years ago. The blowhole is associated with steam discharge from the main craters and represents volcanic activity outside the main crater. The site is also associated with geological research undertaken in the 1860s by Reverend J T Woods, the first specialist geologist to live in South Australia (HB 3/2006). |
