Significance |
This house was built in 1882 for Joachim Matthias Wendt, the founder of one of South Australia's most prominent firms of jewellers and watchmakers. Wendt, who occupied the house until his death in 1917, had considerable skills in his craft as a jeweller, with the best of his silver work ranking with the finest produced in this country in the second half of the 19th century. Wendt was also involved in other commercial ventures such as the Theatre Royal and Adelaide Arcade. The house, which remains in a relatively unaltered state, is typical of the dwellings built in the southeast of the city by wealthy residents of Adelaide in the later part of the 19th century. |
