Salvation Army Women's Hostel |
Registered Name |
Salvation Army Women's Hostel |
Significance |
Built in 1921, the hostel is important for its association with the Salvation Army, being representative of the philanthropic work of that organisation. It also signifies the changing role of women in the workforce, particularly in the years following the First World War. The hostel represents the many services that the Salvation Army provided, in this case a safe environment for women, particularly for working women from country areas. Architecturally, the building is representative of the type of building constructed for institutional use in the 1920s with its use of red brick and its austere decoration in the form of timber balustrades and leadlights.
