Significance This school building is associated with the passing of the South Australian Education Act in 1875 which provided for compulsory education for children aged 7-13. Built as one of the first of a number of 'Model Schools' throughout the state and capable of accommodating 600 pupils, the Gawler school is a particularly attractive and robust example of its type, notable for the fine detailing of its masonry walls and gabled roofs.
