Registered Name Gillen Pumping Station site
Significance The historic remains of the pumping station at Gillen, the recessed cliff site with its funnels and the in situ boiler, are representative of one of the earliest planned irrigation schemes along the River Murray and a noteworthy experiment in assisting the urban unemployed. The site reflects the hardships at the Gillen Village Settlement which disbanded in early 1896, due mainly to the pump being installed incorrectly after extraordinary physical effort and without advice.
