Details (Known As) |
Former Blacksmith Shop & Dwelling |
Registered Name |
Shop and Dwelling - Blacksmith Shop and Dwelling |
Significance |
The blacksmith's shop is unusual for South Australia as it is built of stone married with a pug and pine dwelling. Few blacksmith's shops had a dwelling attached due to the high fire risk. The dwelling had limewashed calico ceilings and rope cornices. The termite resistant qualities of the local native pine, Callitris, are evident in the building.
Melrose, surveyed in 1853 and initially supporting a mining venture which later failed, is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. Until the 1870s Melrose was the business, postal, judicial and religious centre for the Far North. |
