Dwelling - Forbes' Folly |
Significance |
Buildings traditionally known as 'follies' are rare in South Australia. This old tower is aptly named, given its original purpose. The stone tower was built in 1865 on a hilltop on the property of James Forbes, to satisfy a whim of his wife. The Forbes lived at 'Glen Head', which had only an easterly view, while the tower provided commanding views north and westwards. It is said that Mrs Forbes sat in the room at the top (then roofed), mainly to spy on neighbours (particularly at 'Springfield') while she did her needlework! However, it appears she did not satisfy her curiosity, dying (in 1865) before the tower was completed. James Forbes died in 1869. The original wooden stair case has been removed. |
