St Peter Island Whaling Sites, Nuyts Archipelago Conservation Park [Designated places of archaeological significance] |
Registered Name |
St Peter Island Whaling Sites, Nuyts Archipelago Conservation Park |
Significance |
The St Peter Island Whaling Station provides evidence of one of the Colony's first export industries, of which little is known or documented. It is one of a very small number of whaling station sites that have been located in South Australia.
The site of the St Peter Island Whaling Station may yield information about the whaling industry, and the living and working conditions of the whalers engaged in this early staple industry. (HSA Assessment Report 11/5/2000). |
