Registered Name 'B' Division Cell Block
Significance The B Division cell block at Yatala Labour Prison represents a significant phase in the history of penal management in South Australia. Its construction was associated with the cessation of transportation of 'serious' criminals and the commuting of the sentence of transportation to that of hard labour. B Division was the first cell block in South Australia to be built in accordance with the separation system of incarceration, with prisoners accommodated in individual cells rather than communal wards, and is a rare and integral part of a significant development in South Australia's penal history.
