Border Cairn (Todd's Obelisk), Chowilla Game Reserve [Part of Bookmark Biosphere Reserve Buffer Zone], Lake Littra |
Registered Name |
Border Cairn (Todd's Obelisk) |
Significance |
The cairn marking the border between South Australia and New South Wales is significant for its association with the history of surveying in South Australia and the physical identity of the State itself. The cairn is associated with Sir Charles Todd, whose work in establishing telegraphic communication between South Australia and the eastern states made accurate determination of the 141st meridian possible. As Government Observer (Astronomer), it was Todd who erected the cairn in 1868 to mark the location of the meridian, fixing its position using a combination of astronomical readings and telegraphic links with Sydney and Melbourne. |
