Belair Railway Station & Signal Box |
Registered Name |
Belair Railway Station and Signal Box |
Significance |
The Belair Railway Station is significant because of its association with the construction of the Adelaide-Nairne railway in 1879-83. The line was an ambitious engineering feat undertaken to link Adelaide ultimately with Melbourne and the eastern states. The station buildings, constructed at a time of rapid expansion of the South Australian rail network, are a good, intact example of 19th century timber, iron and steel design and construction. The railway station also played an important role as the nearest public transport stop to National Park, the State's first and only national park 1891- 1919 (HSA, 1/2000). |
