Hawthorn Child Care Centre (former Dr Frayne's House & Surgery - an example of Modern Movement architecture) |
Registered Name |
Hawthorn Child Care Centre - Former Dr Frayne's House and Surgery |
Significance |
Built in 1940 to a design of the architect, Jack McConnell, this house is one of the first buildings to be built in South Australia using Modern Movement design philosophies. What has resulted is a horizontally emphasised, flat roofed, pale yellow brick construction composed as a series of interlocking cubes, some of which are voids, some are solid. It is a fine example of early modern architecture in South Australia. |
