Scotch College (former 'Torrens Park') Main House, former Stables & East Lodge |
Registered Name |
Scotch College. Former Torrens Park - Stables & East Lodge |
Significance |
'Torrens Park' is of significance for its association with several prominent South Australian families. The house was originally built by Robert Richard Torrens, the founder of the Torrens Title system of registering the ownership of land, a method which was subsequently adopted internationally. The house was later owned by Walter Watson Hughes, one of the founders of the University of Adelaide, and the Barr Smith family, prominent pastoralists and merchants. The property gave its name to the surrounding suburb of Torrens Park and the house remains as a significant example of the larger Victorian mansions built on the outskirts of Adelaide. The East Lodge gatehouse represents the scale of the original estate (Mitcham Heritage Survey, 1995). |
