Details (Known As) |
Dwelling (former 'Glantawe House') |
Registered Name |
Dwelling - Former Glentawe House |
Significance |
Glantawe House was constructed for Basil Dunstan, Manager of the Willunga-Bangor (later Australian Slate Quarry) Company in 1925. It was probably designed by his father John Dunstan, a successful Sydney architect, who had purchased the derelict Bangor quarry in 1917.
Technologically, the house appears to be unique in Australia. It is a fascinating display of slate building craft carried out by a family intimately involved in the slate industry, and was part of an innovative publicity and marketing strategy. (Fleurieu Peninsula Heritage Survey 1985) |
