Details (Known As) |
Lake Harry Date Plantation Site |
Registered Name |
Date Plantation Ruins |
Significance |
The site, comprising ruins, is significant because it is the remains of the largest date plantation in South Australia, planted on an experimental basis by the State Government during the late 1880s and early 1890s. It is an example of attempts to establish viable industries in the arid areas of the State. The plantation had 2,622 trees in 1896-97, but floundered during World War One because of drought and labour shortages (HCB Register Nomination Report, 1984). |
