Registered Name Former Thebarton Town Hall Complex
Significance The Former Thebarton Town Hall Complex demonstrates the aspirations and confidence of municipal bodies during the interwar period, and in particular, at the peak of the state's 1920s economic boom. Designed by Sydney theatre architects Kaberry and Chard in an eclectic style and completed in 1928, the complex is noted for its outstanding interior, including elaborate fibrous plaster decoration and a complex and sophisticated `tumbling light' system of dimmable polychrome indirect lighting effects. The complex was built by the Corporation of the Town of Thebarton and funded through a 21-year lease agreement with commercial film exhibitor D. Clifford Theatres Limited.
