DESCRIPTION
Details (Known As) Former Naval Drill Hall, HMAS Encounter
Registered Name Navy Drill Hall
Significance Originally the Colony's Naval Brigade was located at the Torpedo Station on the Port River and then at Largs Bay, on the triangle of land north of the railway station. The Navy Drill Hall at Birkenhead was built c1919 and is significant for its association with the early years of the Naval Reserve and for its long association with the Royal Australian Navy until its closure in the 1990s. There are a large number of Army Drill Halls scattered throughout South Australia but it would appear that this is one of the very few Naval Drill Halls in existence.
