| Significance |
Superb examples of stromatolites are exposed on faces of limestone of the Trezona Formation in the banks of the Enorama Creek. These exposures are considered to be of outstanding merit. The stromatolites are all domed, but exhibit a variety of shapes in detail, ranging from broad algal mats through individual mushroom-shaped growths to a series of parallel columns. Stromatolites are layered sedimentary structures left behind by the life activities of various primitive micro-organisms and are the earliest evidence we have of the existence of life on earth.
It was also in this area that Sir Douglas Mawson (1949) recognised evidence of a Precambrian glaciation in the overlying tillite of the Elatina Formation and correlated it with glacial sequences in sedimentary rocks south of Adelaide. (Adapted from HB Assessment Report)
